About Thru-Hiker's Journey
Updated April 20, 2017, 1:13 pm.

Thru-Hiker's Journey is a backpacking simulation game on the Appalachian Trail for Android and iOS. Begin your hike at Springer Mountain, Georgia and try to survive all the way to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. Budget your resources and make careful decisions at shelters and towns. Plodding along down the trail, everything seems fine. Then disaster strikes! A rattlesnake bite, lyme disease, or even an untimely sunburn can ruin your chances of seeing Katahdin.

Featuring:
  • Real life town and shelter names and distances
  • Northbound and Southbound hiking options
  • 16 different playable characters
  • Dozens of gear choices - backpacks, trekking poles, etc.
  • Nature scenery that changes with the seasons
  • Special moments at famous trail landmarks
  • Trail name generator
Cost:
The game will be released as a free app on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It contains optional video ads and in-app purchases to unlock additional characters and gear choices. Headlamp Studios will donate 10% of all profits from the game to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as a way to thank the community.

About Development:
Thru-Hiker's Journey was designed, developed, and produced by Brad Allmendinger, the one man team of Headlamp Studios, LLC, over the course of 9 months. The mobile game is a more complex, polished version of a precursor web game that was released in 2013. The web version has over 60,000 lifetime plays, which is remarkable for a game with no graphics or marketing.

The gameplay was originally based on the classic educational game, Oregon Trail.
